With the help of his wife, Nyström posed his daughter in different scenes and positions and then used Photoshop to transform the photos.

In an interview with Phlearn, Nyström explains the experience of creating the photo “Birthday Party”:

I love creating all these conceptual pictures. This one we took about a month before she turned 1. I had the idea in my head for quite a while. At that time she still couldn’t stand by herself so we had to hold her up and Photoshop the hands away. She was so excited about being allowed to stand on the table and there were so many colorful things to look at.

Here at Krome Photos, this photo series pulls at our heartstrings. We love to inspire our users to think beyond the photos they have on their camera or phone and imagine the possibilities that these photos provide. We hope this photo series inspires you to think of what you can do with your family photos! And remember, if you aren’t as passionate about Photoshop as Emil Nyström is, then your Krome editor is just a click away!

In the series called the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), photographer Matej Peljhan created a series featuring a 12 year old boy with muscular dystrophy. The boy, Luka, has extreme physical limitations because his disorder causes muscle weakness. Despite these limitations he has a vivid imagination and with help of photographer Matej Peljhan, Luka is the subject of these creative and inspiring photos. The photographer changed the perspective of photos – photographing them from above. With this twist of perspective he was able to put Luka into creative poses such as playing basketball, skateboarding, and diving under water.

Whether you’re the photographer or the subject, it is always a good idea to know your poses. Whether you’re having a night out on the town with friends, standing in front of a sunset, or posing with your family, these tips can help your subjects look their best – and help you look your best!

Before I get into the various poses, remember that the key to any good pose is posture. Good posture is necessary for any portrait photo no matter what the pose, but this is especially true for the first pose I am going to talk about: sitting down poses.

Sitting Down Poses
When you take a shot of someone sitting down, make sure they are sitting straight up, yet relaxed. It is even a good idea to have them lean forward a tiny bit. Tell your subject to bring their head forward a little and tilt it down slightly. This forward position will decrease the chance of neck wrinkles or a double chin. Also, make sure their legs are not totally flat or pressed against what they are sitting on. By lifting up their legs about half of an inch, it creates the illusion that they are fully sitting down and results in a more flattering photo. Another thing to remember is to bend certain body parts. Straight arms, legs, head, and torsos generally look stiff and very unnatural in sitting down poses. Try bending arms slightly at the elbow, tilting the head, leaning slightly forward at the waist, and relaxing the fingers.

Standing Up Poses
How often do you take a moment to capture the moment with a quick standing pose? It’s easy to go into default mode, but take a look at these tips to help improve your subject’s poses.

Many photographers avoid photographing women with their shoulders facing head on toward the camera. Shoulders are the widest part of the body, so we need to flatter these wide parts with creative poses. Instead of having shoulders straight on to the camera, angle them a touch to help lead your viewer’s eye into the shot and towards the face. Pose a subject’s arms in a way that avoids having them just hang so that they are pressed up against their body. Especially, if they are wearing short sleeves or a shirt with no sleeves, this can result in an unflattering photo. Instead, focus on slightly bending the subject’s arms at the elbow and pull them away from the body by putting them on hips, holding an object (bouquet, piece of her clothing, someone’s hand, etc.), placing her hands in her front or back pockets, clasping behind back, resting against a wall, or putting her arms overhead.

Posing Men
Pose men in positions that appear self-assured and confident. Easy tips for guys are to shoot low, head tipped slightly up or slightly down, legs apart whether sitting or standing, and shoulders square to the camera. Try having your subject pose with arms folded across the chest, or have him put his hands in his pockets.

Posing Kids
For children under the age of five, just accept that your subject is most likely not going to hold a pose for you. Rather than force, bribe, or fight to get a pose, go with the flow and photograph them candidly, mixed in with a few shots of them looking at you. Your success will most likely increase if you get low, down on their level, and involve them. Let them help you decide how the images are going to turn out. For example, play a game where you choose a “pose,” and then let them choose one. You choose, they choose. Often the “poses” that children suggest are laughing, jumping, running, staring… and THAT is perfection.

Do you use any of these tips in your poses or photography? What are your go-to poses? Let us know in the comment section below!

Post your answers in the comments section and check back later for the answer!

ANSWER:

Version 1.0 of Photoshop was released by Adobe in 1990. The original creators of Photoshop were Thomas Knoll and John Knoll. They began creating the soft ware for self use in the late 1980s and in 1989 the finalized a deal with Adobe to sell the software. As explained on the Computer History Museum post about Adobe V1.0:

Thomas Knoll, a PhD student in computer vision at the University of Michigan, had written a program in 1987 to display and modify digital images. His brother John, working at the movie visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic, found it useful for editing photos, but it wasn’t intended to be a product. Thomas said, “We developed it originally for our own personal use…it was a lot a fun to do.”

Gradually the program, called “Display”, became more sophisticated. In the summer of 1988 they realized that it indeed could be a credible commercial product. They renamed it “Photoshop” and began to search for a company to distribute it. About 200 copies of version 0.87 were bundled by slide scanner manufacturer Barneyscan as “Barneyscan XP”.

Recently, the Computer History Museum has made the source code of the first version of Adobe Photoshop available for download. Check it out on the Computer History Museum site.

Indulge yourself this Valentine’s Day with great self-portraits! Take a picture of you with your valentine – your loved one, your child or even your pet. Whether you are using a smartphone or a DSLR camera, these tips will help you take the best self-portraits possible!

Tip #1
Be sure to be aware of your background. You don’t want anything distracting taking the focus off of your subject. Try to use stable trees or a wall as opposed to busy traffic or crowds.

Tip #2
Use Valentine’s related props. This is especially good when taking photos with kids and toddlers. There are so many items to be used, stuffed animals, or a heart shaped box of chocolate. These things will give you a photo full of love and smiles.

Tip #3
Use natural light if possible. It sets a dreamier mood than the harsh bright light of the flash. If possible take your photos outside, or near a window. Adjust your white balance. This setting is also available on smart phones as well – just choose incandescent, fluorescent, cloudy or daylight for your particular light situation.

Tip #4
When taking photos with kids get down on their level! Experiment with angles. While lying down next to them on the floor may feel silly, you will get a better shot than trying to force them where they do not want to go. Plus it could result it more candid laughs!

Tip #5
Try to avoid using flash when you are taking portrait shots outside at night. Many cameras and cell phones have special modes for low light portraits. Using that mode or adjusting your settings can help prevent the background from being completely blown out of the shot.

Tip #6
Silhouette photos can be great ways of capturing a romantic mood and are easy to take. Silhouette photography requires that you use pure back lighting. That is, you want to place yourself so that you maximize the amount of light in the scene coming from behind you.

Tip #7
Capture the memories of your Valentine Day celebration by taking photos of the different moments or aspects of the day. Include the gift from your loved one, the table setting of a romantic candle lit table, a beautiful sunset that was shared, or your child giving their mother or father a valentine.

Tip #8
If you are using a cell phone that does not have a front facing camera, try holding the cell phone at an upward angle to make sure you get yourself fully in the photo. If you are taking a photo with someone else in it make sure you get as close as possible to also ensure you both are in the photograph.

Tip #9
If you are using a DSLR camera and have a tripod you can set the camera up where you want it and then use the timer to take a self-portrait.

Tip #10
Remember to have fun and experiment! The more you experiment with angles and different framing the better chance you have at capturing a scrapbook worthy photo. And if you are having fun while you are doing it the real smiles will be endless.

Keep these tips in mind for the best Valentine’s photos! Got any of your own tips to share? Let us know if the comments section below.

Happy shooting!

Smartphone cameras are great tools for capturing memorable events in one’s life. They are easy to use, compact, and convenient. However a common problem smartphone photographers run into is difficulty with the digital zoom. Some might say digital zoom in smartphones are completely useless. That is not true, and today, you will find out how you can be a pro with only your smartphone and digital zoom.

Digital Zoom vs. Optical Zoom

Before we share our essential tips for using digital zoom, let us first get a thorough understanding of what digital zoom is and how it compares to optical zoom.

Digital Zoom—this is a feature most touted and, therefore, prominent in smartphones and common digital cameras. Digital zoom generally refers to the magnification of a specific part of an image. Since the camera lenses of smartphones aren’t adjustable, this feature utilizes the device’s internal cropping and enlarging capabilities. When used to its limit, it generally results to blurry and pixelated images.

Optical Zoom—contrary to digital, optical zoom uses adjustable telephoto lens, which helps retain and improve an image’s quality. Optical zoom is a feature generally seen in most digital cameras.

How to Effectively Use Digital Zoom

Knowing the difference between optical and digital zoom, you might think that digital zoom has no redeeming features. That is not exactly true. If you know how to use digital zoom correctly, you can actually produce highly stunning images with it, which you can share online or print.
To get great results using your smartphone and digital zoom, here are four things you need to remember:

Tip #1: Use It Only When Necessary

If you can get closer to it, then do so. This will ensure that your images will come out clear and crisp. Only use digital zoom when your circumstance doesn’t allow you to get near to your subject such as when there’s an irremovable or unavoidable obstacle between the two of you (i.e., you can’t get close to a lion in the safari without endangering yourself or take a picture of a rare bird without scaring it away).

Tip #2: Use True Digital Zoom

There are numerous mobile apps today that include digital zoom features. They might be good for adding effects to your images, but never use them if you want clean and clear photos. Opt to capture images directly with your smartphone’s camera instead.

Tip #3: Don’t Overuse It

Digital zoom, in both smartphones and cameras, has limits. If you want to get the best photos out of it, never use it in maximum level. For example, if your smartphone allows you to digitally zoom up to five times, you can most probably get the best images at 3x zoom or lower.

Tip #4: Lessen the Shaking

Have you ever noticed that the more you zoom, the more the shaking of your hands becomes visible? It might not appear troublesome during the shoot, but the image you will get will be blurry and low quality at best. To solve this, try one of the following solutions:

Steady you hands, and shoot your subject several times, preferably from different angles. This way, you can choose which photo is the best and which looks closest to your vision of the image.

Use your phone or camera’s anti-shake feature, if it has one. Most of the new smartphone models today such as Samsung’s Galazy S3, iPhone 5, and Lumia 920 come with image stabilization. Use this feature to reduce the shakiness and ensure clear and clean images.

Use a tripod. If your smartphone doesn’t have image stabilization and if you’re not confident of your hands’ steadiness, the best option will be to use a tripod. Not only will it improve your photo’s overall quality but it will also beneficial for timed and group shots.

Who says digital zoom is worthless? If you follow the tips we shared, you can certainly capture images you will be most proud to share with everyone you know, online or offline.
